Abstract:
In this chapter the scope of Spatial analysis is introduced as a field of Geography. The interconnection with other disciplines is presented, as well as recent trends in the field. There is a brief historical review of the evolution of Geography and Spatial Analysis as well as an overview of several applications in different problems. A description of the data used in Spatial analysis is provided and the distinction between spatial and non-spatial data is explained. In addition, the arrangement of data in terms of the Geographic data matrix is presented, while there is a discussion concerning several problems arising during the statistical analysis of spatial phenomena, which are related to some properties of spatial data, mainly the property of spatial autocorrelation. Finally, there is a brief presentation of the data analysis methods which are developed in the following chapters, as well as a description of the data employed in the examples. The Appendix of this chapter includes definitions of several basic concepts in Geography.
