Abstract:
The book attempts to provide a concise appraisal of Greek economic history. Its starting point is the mid-1750s’ when the Renaissance of the Greek area took place and lasted until the end of the 20th century. The chapters are organised according to the following structure. The first chapter attempts to outline the economic Renaissance of the Greek area within the context of the more general rearrangements recorded in the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century when it was integrated into the framework of global trade exchanges. The second chapter analyses the attempts to reconstruct the Greek economy and society during the first decades of the Greek kingdom, initiating with the recognition of the new state (1832) and ending with the distribution of the national lands (1871). Furthermore, chapters 3 and 4 present the historical development of the agricultural sector in Greece during the 19th and 20th centuries. In the fifth chapter, we discuss the period of the formation of Greek capitalism during 1871- 1909. This period coincided with the Great Depression (1873-1896), which changed European capitalism. The sixth chapter summarises the key points regarding the peculiar features of the Greek road towards economic development. Chapters 7 and 8 provide an analytical framework to understand the transformations of the Greek economy during the period of the Reconstruction, the Balkan Wars, the Asia Minor Catastrophe (1909-1922) and the interwar period (1922- 1940). Lastly, chapter nine, entitled "From Economic History to Economic Policy: Policy Directions in the Postwar Period, 1949-2001", attempts to present the historical link between the postwar great economic growth cycle and the current status of the Greek economy.
