Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 10 examines the evolving conception of space in the post–World War II era. Space became an active field of artistic intervention, initially explored on the canvas and subsequently engaged with directly in physical environments. Artists sought to materialize space as a tangible “object,” experimenting first with unconventional materials within the confines of figurative space before abandoning traditional studio practices altogether. They began intervening in spatial contexts ranging from galleries and museums to urban buildings and remote outdoor sites. This expanded sensory engagement took diverse forms—tactile and visual, monumental and minimal. Gestural acts included large-scale interventions such as “packaging” entire buildings, as well as subtler gestures like positioning large geometric solids within exhibition spaces. The chapter concludes by reflecting on contemporary spatial interventions by artists, many of whom reject conventional labels like sculptor or painter, instead identifying themselves as visual artists who redefine the boundaries of artistic practice through their work with space.
