Abstract: |
The book explores the historical evolution of spatial representation in the arts, alongside its definitions and constructions within the field of architecture. From the outset, it becomes evident that the concept of space is inherently complex, as its artistic and architectural interpretations are closely intertwined with social, political, institutional, and cultural contexts.
The parallel exploration of art and architecture begins with the introduction of perspective in visual representation—a pivotal moment when space was first constructed on the pictorial surface. The varied responses by artists—whether through depicting space via perspective, constructing it on the figurative surface, or abandoning representation altogether to engage directly with physical space—demonstrate the constantly evolving nature of spatial perception. Just as the surrounding world continued to transform, so too did the ways in which space was envisioned, interpreted, and expressed.
In addressing architecture, our aim is to examine both the theoretical frameworks developed in different historical periods and the architectural works that embody diverse spatial conceptions. We are particularly interested in how space assumes different forms over time, shaped by the sociopolitical conditions that architecture is called upon to address.
While scientific inquiry into space may have its roots in geometry, it is important to recognize that spatial understanding also arises from intuition and the sensory experience of natural phenomena. Thus, conceptions of space involve a synthesis of logic, perception, and philosophical reflection—components that together shape our understanding of the world.
Ultimately, space is not merely the physical environment we inhabit; it is a dynamic force that informs our perception, evokes emotional responses, and mediates our relationship with the world around us.
