Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 9 explores the transformation of architectural space in the early decades of the 20th century, a period in which space is increasingly conceived in relation to time. Within the modernist movements of the 1920s, architecture begins to generate its own spatial environment—one that surrounds, defines, and interacts with the built form. The focus shifts from traditional architectural composition to the design and orchestration of space itself. The years leading up to World War I and the interwar period are marked by a pursuit of spatial clarity and adherence to a central principle: functionality. What functions effectively is now considered beautiful. Architectural and urban space is reimagined in mechanical terms—organized, efficient, and stripped of ornamentation—echoing the precision and logic of the machine. The chapter then turns to key examples of modern architecture, highlighting the distinctive characteristics that emerge as functional space becomes the driving force of architectural expression and production.
