Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 7 explores the transformation of urban space in the late 19th century, a period marked by industrial expansion and the pervasive presence of steam, which clouds the cityscape and symbolizes the irreversible shift toward modernity. The growing contrast between the metropolis and the countryside becomes a defining feature of modern life. During this time, art historians influenced by Kantian and Hegelian aesthetics begin to conceptualize space as an essential component of architectural reasoning, marking a significant development in spatial thought. Urban space continues to expand rapidly, driven by the forces of urbanism that blur the boundaries between city and nature. The artificial environment of the modern city is increasingly penetrated by elements of the natural world, while new horizons emerge through travel, exploration, and the conquest of mountain peaks. Simultaneously, the advent of early cinema and moving-image theaters introduces hallucinatory and immersive experiences, further reshaping perceptions of space and intensifying the modern fascination with the unknown.
