Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 5 addresses the polycentric organization of Baroque architectural space, characterized by grand interior volumes and intricate exterior surfaces, particularly evident in the opulent palaces and monumental churches of the period. The chapter then turns to the 18th century—the so-called age of history and reason—during which space acquires the defining attributes of a rational system. Public sculpture and painted environments become instruments of moral instruction, while architecture is governed by principles of proportion, scale, section, plan, and elevation. In this context, space is rendered lucid, orderly, and precisely defined—nothing is left to chance or irregularity. It is a space once again conceived as the foundation of a culture striving to define itself as classical, a culture that gives rise to the Encyclopédie and the intellectual aspirations of the Enlightenment.
