Abstract: |
Chapter 11 summarizes the preceding discussions concerning the theoretical framework applied, the significant milestones in the history of ancient Greek images, their prehistory and early development, as well as the main contexts of their production and use. Prior to this, however, the analysis of the visual worlds of Greek antiquity is completed with a brief reference to the visual construction of counter-worlds. These are images of ethnic, cultural, moral, political, and social otherness, which essentially constitute the flip side of the coin of identity, as discussed in previous chapters. Illustrative examples include ethnocultural alterities as constructed in images of Thracians, Scythians, Phrygians, Lydians, and Persians, as well as moral-political alterities as constructed in images of Silens.
