The turn to becoming: Image and movement
Authors: Mikrakis, Manolis
Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 10 explores the depiction of action in the visual arts, with an emphasis on sculpture and vase painting during the late sixth and early fifth centuries BCE. This period marks the transition toward democracy in Athens, the conflict with the Persians, and other pivotal events that prompted radical revisions in the understanding of the world and the role of humans within it. The visual arts were called upon to visualize this new anthropocentric worldview by advancing narrative techniques, the representation of the moving human body, and the expression of emotions through images. Key milestones in these developments include the introduction of the red-figure technique in Athenian vase painting, the work of the so-called Pioneers in this technique and their successors, as well as the abandonment of archaic rigidity in favor of greater naturalism in free-standing monumental sculpture.
