Abstract: |
Chapter 9 examines the household, marriage, the symposium, various spectacles, athletics, and labor as social contexts for the development of the visual arts and as fields for the construction of realities through visual means. Given the pivotal role of the family, the symposium, and athletics in the formation of social identities within the framework of the city-state, the overview yields several insightful observations, among them regarding the distinction between the public and private spheres, the visual construction of the role of women in both public and private life, the socialization of youth, and the social status of artisans.
