The lifeworld of the arts: Religion, death, and politics
Authors: Mikrakis, Manolis
Description:
Abstract:
Following a general introduction to the contextual approach to ancient Greek art, Chapter 8 offers an overview of the arts within the context of religion, cult, funerary, and other ritual practices. In particular, the chapter analyzes the lived experience of statues of gods and other divine images, the use of visual works as votive offerings in sanctuaries on various occasions, and the visualization of cult in art. A notable characteristic in each case is the diversity in the visual construction of religion and ritual practices—diversity also evident in the archaeological and textual sources that inform us about these practices—as well as the interweaving of religion with politics and society. As a representative example of the latter, the sculptures of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia are discussed.
