The Zionist movement of the Jews in Greece. The special case of Thessaloniki
Authors: Tziaras, Kostas
Description:
Abstract:
In the present chapter we first refer to the long-standing Jewish presence in Greece, emphasising the specificity of Thessaloniki, after the arrival of Sephardic Jews and the city's emergence as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans". The second subsection presents and analyses the developments up to the end of the 19th century, the years of the economic and spiritual blossoming of the community. It then examines the particular conditions for the emergence of Zionism in the city as it moved into the 20th century and identifies the turning points.
