Description:
Abstract:
In 2003, the WHO Regional Office for Europe identified the organization of youth-friendly health services as a priority for member states. Adolescent Medicine has since become a recognized subspecialty of Pediatrics. In Greece, a significant milestone was the establishment of the Center for Adolescent Medicine (a UNESCO Chair) under the direction of co-author G. Chrousos, along with the development of the Adolescent Health Unit. However, no provisions have been made for a nationwide geographical distribution of such units or for the full development of a comprehensive medico-social care framework for adolescents. This chapter addresses the specific health problems of adolescents and the impact of recent crises on their wellbeing. It critically evaluates the services currently available in Greece compared to best practices implemented in other countries. The primary aim is to educate future healthcare professionals on this often overlooked and underserved age group, while raising awareness of the urgent need to support initiatives for adolescent health promotion and care during the critical transition to adulthood.
