Abstract: |
This chapter presents the development of intonation in its historical dimension in western art music, focusing on the three fundamental tuning systems that remain relevant for the contemporary interpreter of classical music: Pythagorean tuning, just-pure intonation and equal temperament. The boundaries and problems of each one of these systems are briefly presented, and emphasis is given on the importance of the performer’s interpretive options of intonation. Based on the merits of just intonation esp. in the context of wind ensembles, a series of comprehensive exercises and training routines are proposed, which by training the musical ear, sharpening the sense for intonation and exploring phenomena such as beats and difference tones, aim at creating a reliable routine and good intonation practice.
