Abstract: |
This book explores ensemble playing fundamentals and rehearsal techniques, focusing on small flute- as well as other wind instrument ensembles. It aims to increase the so far limited literature resources in ensemble playing and chamber music pedagogy esp. for wind players. It is addressed to undergraduate as well as post-graduate music students, to instrumental music teachers, ensemble coaches and conductors at all levels in music education, as well as to professional musicians. Defining and concisely analysing basic concepts, principles and values of playing together, it offers a comprehensive account of the relevant theoretical background, while systematically building bridges between theory and practice – practice and theory. Each matter is dealt with on the basis of musical experience and oral traditions as well as scientific knowledge while the proposed exercises and explorations encourage the readers to draw their own conclusions. Building upon each musician’s individual experiences from the moment of discovery to full physical and mental comprehension of various aspects of playing music together, Con-sonances aims to approach the ensemble playing practice in a holistic and interdisciplinary manner and, starting with wind instruments, to contribute to the further development of chamber music pedagogy.
The first part of the book outlines and examines key ensemble playing principles, preconditions and traits for/of a proficient chamber music performance. Methods and good practices in approaching and studying new works particularly in the context of small flute and other wind instrument ensembles are being introduced and described. In separate chapters, terms, notions and concepts are introduced and elaborated such as a) collective sound and timbre, b) tuning and intonation, c) interpretive approaches focused on collective musical gesture and d) internal and external factors and conditions for a productive collaboration and the good functioning of a musical ensemble.
The second part contains the reference musical material of the book. This consists in a series of transcriptions in all major and minor keys of short independent vocal works from the Renaissance until the present times, including an original composition (both by the author Ria Georgiadis). Each work has been transcribed for a flute ensemble as well as one or more additional various homogenous or/and as mixed wind ensemble including flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, horns and trombones. Relevant information such as biographical info, concise descriptive analysis, outlining of structural and stylistic characteristics of each work as well as excerpts and translations (by the authors) of the original lyrics accompany the scores in order that can help shape the interpretation through understanding the character of each composition and/or highlighting the relationship of music and text.
