Nutrition and aquafeeds in organic aquaculture
Authors: Mente, Elena
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter covers aspects of feed use, feed formulation, the use of different alternative raw materials in animal feed and fish feed and the general nutritional principles of aquatic organisms in the context of organic aquaculture. The chapter reviews the research on nutritional requirements of fish and aquatic farmed animals, with the aim of preparing rations of organic feed with nutrient content characteristics that make them suitable for fish farming. The concurrent study of growth parameters, body-liver composition, immunological markers, histology of key organs and fillet composition provide a holistic approach for effective organic farming of the species. Since the availability of organic raw ingredients is limited and the relevant research results are few, further research on this topic for a sustainable organic aquaculture is necessary.
