Reproduction and husbandry in organic aquaculture
Authors: Mente, Elena
Description:
Abstract:
Reproduction in rearing conditions can be achieved naturally (i.e. without exogenous interventions and hormonal treatments) in many fish species by manipulating the photoperiod and water temperature of the environment where fish are bred. In this chapter, the biology of reproduction of fish with examples from the Mediterranean species, sea bream and sea bass is discussed, as well as the larval rearing at the hatchery. It also examines the problems that arise during the larval stages and development of farmed fish for them to meet the requirements of the regulation and the principles of organic production of aquaculture animals.
