Chapter 2 is dedicated to coal, the fuel of the industrial revolution. The energy provided by the use of coal in crafts and industry changed the economic and political correlations in Europe, made the continent energy autonomous and contributed to its imperialist world domination in the 19th century. In the U.S., coal was the foundation of industrialization.
