Abstract:
In the previous chapter, the descriptions and conceptualizations of place extended from abstract space to physical place – crossing a wide spectrum of approaches. Next, landscape and the relationship between place and landscape are investigated in order to clarify the idea of landscape as linked to architectural design. When designing, we accomplish a significant transformation of coordinates moving from place to landscape: we now design in an environment that unfolds vertically. Landscape presupposes the condition of being seen as well as the visual perception of a world rising from topography. Even within dreamy, imaginary or mental landscapes conditions, the world is perceived through gravity. If place is a where it is possible to exist and connect, landscape is where to meet and act. As the object of design -even if not realized- refers to physical space and inhabitation, design caters to the prerequisites of place and the resulting landscape. Landscape as panorama is perceived through culture, history and politics (as a setting of power struggle) and is analyzed artistically and conceptually by the representation of landscape in the arts. As form and configuration, landscape is understood as the unfolding of a theme along a visual horizon. Landscape as constituted powers and influential fields is analyzed in more detail in the following pages. Finally, we turn to landscapes of tourism and their continuous reformulations through advertisement and their visual renderings.
