Description:
Abstract:
The book “Places of Engagement – A methodological approach to the cultural subtext of architectural design” addresses students of architecture by proposing the systematic investigation of the cultural subtext of design and research by design. It draws from the position that loci, landscapes, wider realms -such as ecumene, continuum, network- incorporate natural or abstract forms which constitute the cultural underpinnings of architectural design. Under the conditions of place and landscape -natural and manmade- as within the perceived realms of continuum and network lurk entities and meanings which, once registered by architectural thinking, become part of the design work in process as embedments or "loans". Following these concepts, the tools of site plan, diagram and program are presented and analyzed regarding their role in the making of architectural intention. The four conditions and the three tools offer a framework for the development of design in architecture. The methodology or methodologies presented in this book allow for multiple readings and ways to prioritize the values of cultural influence throughout the design process. As designs are formulated as architectural praxis, what we refer to as loans are returned as counter-loans to the environment; architecture radiates its own values and feeds anew into the cultural continuum.
