Description:
Abstract:
Distinct approaches of modernity, where place (or locus) is concerned, unfold in this chapter. Place, as an entity to be documented and surveyed, appears linked to positive science coupled with the fields of mathematics and geometry, as well as with advancements and practices such as perspective and cartography. As modern art questions the stability of place, the customary relationship between place and architecture is subverted. The transitions from applied metric systems -like the grid and the normative framework of the rationalist city- to the transformation of urban landscape into an isotropic system, to cyberspace and satellite view, reshape the ways we perceive place.
