Romanos the Medolist - Selection of texts
Authors: Zervoudaki, Alexandra
Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, some of the important Kontakia by Romanos the Melodist are studied, in whole or in fragments. Their selection in the chapter has been done based on their content. Thus, biblical Kontakia are initially listed, one with a theme drawn from the Old Testament (To Joseph) and two from New Testament (a Kontakion on the Nativity and one on the Resurrection of Christ), then an occasional Kontakion (In every earthquake and conflagration) and finally a hagiological questionable Kontakion (to the first martyr Stephen). Based on the edition by Grosdidier de Matons (and Maas – Trypanis 1970 for the last one) the text and the corresponding critical note of the edition are recorded. A modern Greek translation and a short commentary on the texts follow.
