Title Details:
Romanos the Melodist
Authors: Zervoudaki, Alexandra
Description:
Abstract:
Perhaps the most important representative of Byzantine hymnography is presented, the Greco-Syrian Romanos the Melodist, whose name has been associated with the first important production of Byzantine hymnography, the Kontakion. His life and work are briefly presented and questions of sources and influences are discussed in more details, with an emphasis on the characteristics of his poetry, such as its narrative and rhetorical character, dialogue and anthropomorphism and of course the theatricality, which led many scholars to consider Romanos as a representative of Byzantine theater. An attempt is also made to investigate the personal ego of the poet through his work, the doctrinal teaching and content. Issues of language and metrics are also briefly considered. Finally, the editions of Roman hymns are briefly presented and a reference is made to the most important translations of Romanic hymns into modern Greek and other languages.
