The Kontakion
Authors: Zervoudaki, Alexandra
Description:
Abstract:
The first important production of Byzantine hymnography, the Kontakion, is thoroughly presented. The theories related to its origin and the place it had and has today in liturgical practice are examined. Its structure and special characteristics, its types, its metric and its performance method are also presented, and a brief presentation of the most important Kontakaria, manuscript collections of Kontakia, is also made. Finally, we “meet” some of the most important hymnographers of its apogee. A special and extensive presentation of the most important representative of the genre, Romanos the Melodist, and his work will be made in the next chapter.
