Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 8 firstly presents the practice of EIA preparation in the USA. It deals with the types, locations and timing of environmental impacts. It also describes the legal requirements for environmental impact studies and gives examples of technical reports for preliminary and final assessments of these impacts as required by applicable law. Knowledge of this subject is essential for the designer in order to effectively shape the design process of a project. Examples of EIAs from the US are presented and a comprehensive EIA is developed for a second airport in Sydney, Australia. First of all the need is explored and alternative solutions are formulated. Then the environmental effects on land uses, noise, water and air quality, health, flora and fauna, cultural heritage, landscape etc. are analyzed. Finally, the social, cumulative and economic impacts are assessed and an Environmental Management System is proposed.
