Abstract: |
After a historical review of the institution of Environmental Impact Assessment throughout this book, the legislation that governs Environmental Impact Studies (EIA) is presented, as well as key points that were milestones for the institution. Subsequently, the Environmental Impact Legislation is examined in specialized categories of projects, such as the production of energy, natural gas, as well as Renewable Energy Sources. The following are the structure of a study and specific stages of EIA preparation concerning control, reporting, consultation, investigation techniques, evaluation criteria, environmental indicators and indicator selection criteria. This is followed by a review of the planning aids used to prepare the Environmental Impact Study, such as aerial photographs, geographic databases, information layers, cartographic analysis techniques, data banks, and computer-aided exhibits. Then the environmental impacts per project category are examined, specifically the impacts of dams, aviation, and transportation projects, as well as the measures to deal with them. EIA examples are given as case studies of projects in Greece and abroad. In Greece, the first study concerns the Siatista-Krystallopigi axis perpendicular to the Egnatia Road from the uneven junction of Argos Orestikos to Koromilia, while the second concerns the construction of an irrigation network in the farm of the Mesiani community in the prefecture of Kozani. From abroad, EIAs in both the USA and Australia are examined, with a case study of the second airport in Sydney, Australia. The following are brief descriptions of various social science tools that may be used to assess these impacts. Finally, some problems in specific issues of environmental economics are presented and solved.
