Description:
Abstract:
The main aim of the chapter is to present museums as cultural heritage institutions and to highlight the key nodes in their development so that they can be considered -according to the International Council of Museums- as “a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that research, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection, and knowledge sharing. In addition, it points out the differences between tangible and intangible cultural heritage and attempts to familiarize the reader with the concept of indigenous knowledge. Finally, before referring to the post-colonial period and the need to decolonize museums, it attempts a very brief introduction to the specific conditions that have shaped the documentation ecosystem in the field of cultural heritage institutions and the field of museums.
