Abstract:
Cataract, being one of the most common causes of blurred vision after a certain age, is part of the phenomenon of aging of the eye. Glaucoma is the most common acquired multifactorial optic neuropathy and the leading cause of irreversible vision loss with specific features such as increased intraocular pressure (IOP), optic nerve damage, and visual field loss. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease, which is characterized by elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), which are due to the lack or pathological resistance to insulin. The incidence of diabetes mellitus increases significantly with age. It is the most common endocrine condition. A modern optician-optometrist must be aware of all these ailments and for this reason they are analyzed in this chapter.
