This chapter provides a rough historical and theoretical framework for ecocriticism, which is the study of literary texts through an ecological lens. The chapter outlines briefly the four "waves" of ecocriticism and their distinct aims and approaches. This chapter also roughly outlines some key aspects of environmental ethics and ecological theory that run through ecocritical approaches, and more specifically biocentrism and ecocentrism, deep ecology, ecofeminism and social ecology.
