Contemporary and traditional forms of political participation
Other Titles: Male and female patterns of young adults
Authors: Kakepaki, Maria
Description:
Abstract:
The Chapter will start with an overview of the debate on traditional (or formal) and new (or informal) forms of political participation, integrating the age and gender perspective. Then, using empirical data, the evolution of some key figures will be presented. Particular emphasis will be placed on the discussion on the use of the Internet and social media in the mobilization and engagement of young women, through empirical data (YouWho? survey) in order to demonstrate the importance of the internet and social media in the formation of contemporary identities of young men and women. It will be examined whether there are gender differences in the use of media or whether, on the contrary, the so-called "digital divide" creates other inequalities on the basis of educational and geographical divisions.
