Theoretical interpretations of unemployment, types of unemployment, policy proposals
Authors: Karamesini, Maria
Description:
Abstract:
The chapter examines the theoretical interpretations and types of unemployment according to its causes. It begins with voluntary/involuntary unemployment, frictional unemployment, and cyclical and structural unemployment. It presents the neoclassical labour market theory, the Keynesian macroeconomic employment theory, and the contemporary theoretical approaches like monetarism and the new Keynesian. Then it focuses on the different interpretations of technological unemployment from the Classical to the neo-Schumpeterian school of economic thought and concludes with Marxist theory and the interpretation of unemployment as a consequence of the economic crises of capitalism.
