Theories of regional inequalities
Authors: Artelaris, Panagiotis
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the main modern theories of regional growth and development. Special emphasis is placed on the predictions of these theories regarding the process of regional convergence or divergence (that is, the evolution of regional inequalities), as well as their weaknesses and limitations. More specifically, it is presented the neoclassical model of exogenous growth of Solow-Swan, some of the most important models of the theory of endogenous growth (Romer, Lucas), the basic model of the New Economic Geography (Krugman), the (Keynesian) theories of cumulative growth, as expressed by the works of Myrdal and Kaldor and finally, the theories of geographically uneven development, which are part of the Marxist tradition.
