Description:
Abstract:
The process of three-dimensional digital surface reconstruction, also known as reverse engineering, is studied. In this process, a real 3D object is digitized, i.e., a finite number of point measurements are taken on its surface, to produce a 3D electronic model that accurately describes it. This model can be used in several applications that include dimensional control, prototyping with additive manufacturing, the design and production of a new product, etc. Reverse engineering has applications in the field of medicine where it contributes to modern imaging technologies; in the production of personalized implants and the preparation of difficult surgical operations, in the preservation of cultural heritage with the digital transformation of works of art and artifacts, in the arts, in the design and manufacture of products and so on. In this chapter, we will first study the 3D scanning technologies, used to produce the initial measurements, and then the methodology followed for the complete reverse engineering of a 3D object. The chapter concludes with examples of applying the process to real products.
