Parametric Surfaces

Description:
Abstract:
We can think of a surface as the outer boundary of an object. The simplest surface is the flat surface that we find on the sides of a cube but also many mechanical objects. Nevertheless, most of the surfaces we encounter are quite more complex than that and present a curved geometry. A chair, a couch, and a shoe require "free form" surfaces that are easily shaped by the user of a design system. In this chapter, after first defining some of the most basic properties of surfaces, we will study some common representations of them, found in commercial and academic design systems.
