The resilience of urban space in natural disasters and pandemics
Authors: Dimelli, Despina
Description:
Abstract:
The chapter analyzes the effects of natural disasters and pandemics in cities. More particularly, it examines the role of spatial planning for the protection against floods, earthquakes, and dangerous weather phenomena that are occurring more and more frequently due to climate change. With the analysis of case studies, the author analyzes the possibility of urban space to cope in advance with such phenomena, but also to adapt afterwards to the new situations that arise. Special reference is made to the COVID-19 pandemic which has recently created new conditions in cities.
