Abstract: |
This textbook is an introduction to performance art through activities and projects in the studio, which are framed not only by characteristic instances in the history of the medium itself but also by contemporary, interdisciplinary theoretical debates around performance art. The textbook begins with the introduction of the tools of performance studio practice and the basic terminology linked to it, as well as its early history. Key elements of performance, including the body, objects, the audience, the (public) space and the public sphere are approached through thematic and conceptual associations, with references to autobiography, gender, the augmented body, the everyday, interventions and the natural landscape. The textbook, also, explores different approaches to performance, such as performance for camera, durational performance, participatory performance and performative interventions. The chapters are organized around the systematic examination of key elements of performance art practice, as well as the analysis of key ideas and issues that have been recorded as dominant or recurrent in the theoretical discourse on performance. The case studies analysed in each chapter are accompanied by reflective questions/topics for discussion. A wide range of activities and projects are offered, which aim to enhance skills, promote experimentation and encourage an experiential understanding of theory, history and concepts related to performance art. The book is addressed to students of the Departments of Fine and Applied Arts, Digital and Performing Arts, Culture and Creative Media and Industries, and Theatre Studies.
