Abstract: |
In this textbook, the most common hematological entities in pediatric hematology are analyzed. It is divided into four parts. Each part includes the clinical disorders corresponding to the cellular components of blood (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets), and the last part analyzes coagulation disorders. It is structured with questions and answers aimed at addressing everyday clinical practice questions. Representative pediatric cases are analyzed using information from the patient's history, physical examination, and laboratory tests.
The first part (chapters 1-16) focuses on red blood cells. The indices of red blood cells are interpreted, and an evaluation of anemia is performed. Specifically, hemolytic anemias are studied, with representative examples being hereditary spherocytosis, anemias in neonates, hemoglobinopathies represented by beta-thalassemia, nutritional anemias, and finally, aplastic anemia. The principles of red blood cell and platelet transfusion are also studied.
The second part (chapters 17-24) deals with disorders of white blood cells. Neutropenia, leukocytosis, and variations in the types of white blood cells are analyzed. An evaluation of acute leukemias is performed, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia being a representative example. This chapter also studies lymphomas and the investigation of lymphadenopathy. Additionally, myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic syndromes are analyzed.
The third part (chapter 25) examines platelet disorders. Thrombocytopenias, thrombocytopathies, and thrombocytosis are studied.
The fourth and final part (chapter 26) investigates blood coagulation problems, particularly bleeding disorders and thrombosis.
