Abstract: |
The Bibliographic Guide seeks to map the evolution of Greek reform thought during the first half of the 20th century and to identify its major trends. It consists of five chapters. The first provides an overview of modern Greek education between 1895 and 1950, and presents the key events and reforms of the era. The second chapter addresses the emergence and evolution of the New Education movement in Greece and inscribes it in the broader historical context. In addition, it identifies three distinct reform pedagogical currents and their relation to the language issue and the broader political processes that marked the contemporary Greek society. It presents the key pedagogical concepts, as developed in the context of New Education, as well as the way they are conceptually differentiated and appropriated by the three distinct manifestations of the Greek reform pedagogy. The next three chapters concentrate on liberal, conservative and socialist reform thought respectively. Each chapter is subdivided in sections that correspond to historical sub-periods and highlights their characteristics in terms of pedagogical positions and ideas. The material follows the historical succession and evolution of pedagogical ideas and delineates the social context that framed the reception and dissemination of the labour school principles. The primary and secondary sources presented in the Bibliographical Guide are indicative of the New Education currents, seeks to provide an informative picture of the Greek reform thought and to present key documentation of both the evolution of Greek reform thought during the first half of the 20th century and its distinct currents. The description of each bibliographical reference seeks to help readers to orient themselves in the research field and to evaluate the proposed material.
