The international figures: Xenakis, Christou
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
Both influential and defining as regards the course of postwar modernism, the figures of Iannis Xenakis and Jani Christou are examined in the present chapter. Xenakis developed methods of affiliating music with architecture and mathematics, while his ideas centered around the unification of philosophy, science, and art. Furthemore, he criticized contemporary (mostly serial) music of the 1950s and 60s and redefined its content. Christou put music in the center of his intense philosophical and metaphysic pursuits, and explicated its human, religious, mystical, and redemptive dimensions beyond historical periods, styles, and doctrines. These two important figures are co-examined as regards both their international stature and their influence in Greek postwar avant-garde generation of composers, while analyses of extracts from their works are also included. Christou’s Strychnine Lady (1967) is put on the analytical spot, in relation to European and American experimental music theatre development during the 1960s and 70s. Analytical processes include issues of pictographic notation, aesthetic-philosophical structural terms (patterns, praxis, metapraxis, lunar pattern), musical conception, stage realization, as well as perspectives of myth, ritualization and mysticism.
