The first postwar generation: Papaioannou, Dragatakis, Sicilianos
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
At the emergence of the postwar Greek musical avant-garde generation to the forefront, we see composers of different artistic thought who also share a common perception of expressing the "new". Their contribution in the field of teaching besides composing (Papaioannou), the formation of a modernist musical syntax under contemporary perspectives of Greek tradition (Dragatakis), as well as the integration of the notion of hellenicity into a broader cosmopolitan internationalist context (Sicilianos) are all comparatively examined. Origins of mixture, contrast, and musical identity are discussed as to highlight the variable perspectives of artistic creation, aesthetics, ideology and presence of the above composers in Greek musical life of the 1950s-70s and also of the transitional 1980s.
