The Postwar Avant-Garde (Europe - USA) and Greece
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
The creation of new perspectives in musical avant-garde after 1945 is examined in the present chapter, as a multi-faceted Western cultural phenomenon deriving from the deep roots of German art-music tradition whose revival by the Allies, and especially the USA, involved political influence and anti-communist ideology. The socio-political dimensions of postwar avant-garde are reviewed in relation to its musical and aesthetic ones, while the particular characteristics this movement acquires during its diffusion in Greece after 1950 are given special attention.
