Style and texture in the music of Nikos Skalkottas
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
This chapter is exclusively concerned with Nikos Skalkottas, the most prominent representative of prewar Greek modernism and a figure of pan-European status. His musical portraiture is compiled by focusing on specific examples from all his creative output in order his multi-faceted compositional style to be revealed. Atonality, dodecaphony, tonality, modality, national identity, and popular music, are comparatively being examined under the context of the aesthetic, social and cultural components that formatted Skalkottas’s personality and art, thus revealing the multi-layered hellenicity and the universalist aspect of his oeuvre.
