The Athenian musical life during the Interwar years: People and identities
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
In Chapter 5, the revitalizing of the Athenian musical life in the 1920s and 30s is examined, mainly under a modernization of the symphonic concerts’ programs and the presence of Dimitri Mitropoulos as a performer. Furthermore, composers who expressed their modernistic tendencies through experimental instrumental or timbral innovations like Dimitry Levidis (1886-1951) or pursued a post-Romantic symphonic maximalist style blended with philosophical references like Charilaos Perpessa (1907-1995) are also discussed. Issues of domestic and foreign policies, interaction between music, letters, and fine arts, as well as the perception of musical modernism by Athenian audiences and critics of the Interwar period also comprise components of a comparative commentary.
