Modernists of the Interwar period
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
In Chapter 3 Dimitri Mitropoulos and Nikos Skalkottas are examined as originators of Greek musical modernism during the 1920s and 30s, respectively, in the realm of Austrian-German Expressionism. These two composers, having studied in major European music centers of the 1920s, came to contact with the most current Western-European avant-garde art-music trends of the period. By representing these trends in their works, they turned aside from the National School’s ideological compulsions and aligned themselves with the cultural milieu of the Greek Interwar period.
