Abstract: |
The textbook with title: ‘Intrapartum Maternity Care: From theory to clinical practice’ has the main objective of enhancing the theoretical knowledge and clinical and communication skills of Midwifery students, and, within the context of lifelong learning, of all health professionals for issues surrounding childbirth. This textbook will add to the current literature on the provision of intrapartum maternity care. Numerous up-to-date data and evidence-based recommendations in accordance with the guidelines provided from international organisations and scientific authorities were utilised in the process of editing the textbook. The chapters are structured in such a way so as to promote and support the development of ‘critical thinking’ in the provision of maternity healthcare so that childbirthing is safe, effective and leads to a satisfactory birth experience. The textbook focuses on the communication skills that a midwife should possess and on the risk assessment that needs to be continuously performed in each phase of labour. Intrapartum maternal care represents the main core of knowledge and skills in Midwifery science that is required both for students and other healthcare professionals providing care at childbirth. This textbook contains 12 separate chapters. Initially, the role of the midwife upon admission of the parturient and the referral to the birthing suite is discussed. Next, the medication used in labour, cardiotocography, and non-pharmacological methods of pain relief are contemplated. A special chapter presents the natural (non-pharmacological) methods of labour augmentation. Abnormal presentations (breech presentation, occiput posterior position) and delivery of the second twin are discussed, whereas obstetrical emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, postpartum haemorrhage, and cord prolapse represent separate chapters. Finally, the textbook contains chapters on the issue of perineal care-episiotomy, vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC), and severe preeclampsia-eclampsia.
