Description:
Abstract:
This textbook examines key dimensions of politics in Greece, with an emphasis on the period of the Third Hellenic Republic. The study of these dimensions is primarily carried out using archival material as well as critically examining existing studies. A key perspective in the analysis of Greek politics is how political and social actors perceive and interpret the social and political dynamics and how they act. In this context, it examines the values that shape identities and frame the actions of citizens and social groups (e.g., political culture), as well as the specific manifestations of these actions (e.g., forms of political participation). Emphasis is placed on party and electoral competition in the period 1974-2019, on the political and ideological characteristics of the main political forces and their change or stability over time, on the economic programs that these political forces promote (economic development plans), as well as on political representation, by examining the characteristics of the members of the Greek and European Parliament and their changing profiles over time. Finally, the role of the modern Greek state, from its formation until today, is examined, as well as the scientific debate regarding the Greek state and the domestic "civil society", the state’s intervention and its role in the formation of Greek society and economy, together with the functions and characteristics of the Greek state in a globalized world.
