Description:
Abstract:
The eighth chapter refers to general curriculum adaptations for children with Down syndrome in general education. The active participation of the child with intellectual disability in all activities of school life with parallel interventions, where deemed appropriate by the school staff, is a guarantee for his social inclusion (Allen & Cowdery, 2005. Goldstein, Kaczmarek, & English, 2002 ). These interventions, through the appropriate use of social strategies, should aim to integrate infants and children with Down syndrome into the peer group, to learn conflict resolution strategies and to prolong their stay in the game (Guralnick, 2010). By achieving this level of adaptation, children with intellectual disabilities can respond positively to their social relationships and maintain these skills for a more successful solution of social problems in their interactions with their peers (see also Alevriadou & Giaouri, 2011. Alevriadou & Giaouri, 2012. Alevriadou & Giaouri, 2017. Alevriadou, Giaouri, & Pavlidou, 2016). The success of educational interventions aimed at developing social and communication skills in children with Down syndrome lies in their adaptation to the individual needs of children. Examples of techniques that teachers can use in their classrooms to maximize the learning experience for children with Down syndrome (Wolpert, 2007) and to strengthen their communication skills are described later in this chapter.
