Abstract: |
The book is a handbook on the subject of monument protection, restoration, and management. It recounts how various societies dealt with the remnants of the past from classical times to the end of the 18th century, when the modern concept of monument protection emerged, namely the realization of the need to preserve them as carriers of memory and spiritual values essential to the mental balance of present and future generations. It also recounts the spread of this new concept in Europe and its various practical applications, which gave rise to the various theoretical approaches that subsequently emerged: the classicist concept of monument protection, the 'school' of total stylistic restoration, the Movement against the Restoration of Monuments, the approaches of 'philological restoration' and 'historical restoration', the approach to the issue by A. Riegl and G. Giovannoni, and the 1931 Athens Charter. The following chapters trace the evolution of ideas after World War II, on the one hand up to the 1964 Venice Charter, the main international regulatory text on intervention in monuments still in force today, and on the other hand during the last quarter of the 20th century and the early 21st century, when new perceptions emerged as a result of the globalisation of the issue. At the same time, the history of monument protection in Greece is presented, with its three main periods (1. From the founding of the modern Greek state to World War II, 2. From the end of World War II to the dictatorship of 1967, and 3. From 1974 to the present), the main interventions, the key players, and the legislative and administrative framework. The book concludes with special chapters on the restoration of the Acropolis after 1975 and on the terminology of monumental restoration (in English, French, and Italian), as well as an extensive bibliography.
