Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to present the basic concepts in the field of databases and, in particular, geographic databases. Databases are at the core of modern GIS, and are "collections of non-abstract data that are used by various applications to meet user needs". Data are described through data models and the structure, meaning and connectivity of the data is described in the schema of the database. Regarding the design and modelling of a database, conceptual, logical and physical models are analysed. Finally, the ultimate purpose of a database is discussed which is to answer queries i.e. retrieving specific instances according to defined conditions.
