Abstract:
This chapter introduces the specificities of Geographic Information Systems and clarifies their differences with other information systems. The components that make up a GIS are then described. The difference between data, information and knowledge is also mentioned. Finally, the concept of geographical entities is introduced and how they are defined in terms of geographical location, spatial relationships with other geographical entities and their spatial and thematic characteristics.
